Densification mechanisms of UO2 consolidated by spark plasma sintering

Despite the growing interest in spark plasma sintering (SPS) of uranium dioxide, its mechanisms have yet to be studied great detail. Herein we propose a direct method calculate apparent activation energy for densification, Qact, and stress exponent, n, SPS nearly stoichiometric UO2. A set experiments performed at different heating rates (CHR) pressures levels allowed us Qact respectively, though were limited theoretical density between 50% 75 %. The master curve was employed as complementary compare Qact. average values =96 kJ/mol (CHR), = 100 (MSC) n 1.4. We therefore proposed grain boundary diffusion coupled with sliding densification mechanism. tends lower compared that other processes like conventional (250−450 kJ/mol), creep (350−550 kJ/mol) hot pressing (222 480 kJ/mol). This decrease could due effect electric field combined higher rates, typical SPS.
